Proudly Muslim & Northern

‘Nahel’ (النحل or Arabic for ‘bee’) is special to us. It's a symbol of our city and praised in the Quran for its industriousness. We are a big-hearted lot and you can expect proper northern hospitality, inshallah!

“Manchester’s bee is a worker bee, reflecting a city made by the workers; made by the people, not a city that has grown from royal patronage or easy natural resources. Mancunians have worked hard to make this place thrive.”The Story Behind the Manchester Bee (Beswick, 2020)

“And your Lord inspired the bees: ‘Make your homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct, and feed from the flower of any fruit you please and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.’ From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colours, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.”Quran (An-Nahel, 68-69)

FAQs

1. How do I sign up?

Check the seasonal programme in this website so you can get a feel of what's coming up. To attend an event, you will need to sign up via Luma. You can also join the WhatsApp group to stay in the loop, get early alerts, access community-only events and suggest events. We expect everyone participating to follow the Code of Conduct.

2. Do I have to pay for an event?

We try to make our events as accessible as possible, so we only charge a small fee to cover the cost of running them. We are volunteers and circulate any profit back to the community. For events held in cafes, please be respectful and buy something to support their business.

3. Is there gender segregation?

For most of our events, there is no segregation and everyone are simply expected to be respectful and abide by the Code of Conduct. We will not tolerate bad behaviour and any form of discrimination or harassment. There is a women-only channel in the WhatsApp group where we occasionally organise women-only events e.g. badminton.

4. I'm not Muslim, can I still come?

We aim to provide a safe space for young Muslim professionals to chill, learn and make connections in a halal way, as there are so few alternatives. You are most welcome to join as long as you are respectful and abide by the Code of Conduct.

5. Is there prayer space?

We don't own the places we meet at, however they tend to be in Central Manchester where a prayer space is nearby. Please ask us when you come to the event. Our regular space is Papparoti and there is a small mosque nearby (3 minutes walk).

6. What's the story behind Nahel Manchester?

We originally started with coworking cafe sessions so that Muslim remote-workers can come together once in a while. We were inspired by the active Muslim communities in London, but needed something more authentic for us northerners. Since then we have expanded to a variety of events including games nights. We are still small and minimally managed. To support us, please keep sharing feedback and consider co-hosting events with us. If you would like to propose an event, contact us!
